Northwest Wine Academy
South Seattle College’s Northwest Wine Academy is the first teaching winery in the Puget Sound region. Classes are designed for students who are just getting a start in the wine industry and for professionals who need to enhance or update their skills.

Introduction to Wines of the World: This course introduces students to the classical regions around the globe. Europe is a strong focus for the coursework, and the class will explore the geography, climate, viticulture, history, vintage variations and winemaking practices in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Austria. The New World regions are covered with an emphasis on California, Washington, Oregon, New York, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and Argentina. Wine History & Appreciation I: Ancient Times to the Renaissance: A survey of wine and its role in history, religion, art, culture and society from pre-history to the Renaissance period in Europe. Subjects include, Neolithic discovery, the Ancient Empires of Mesopotamia, Greece, Egypt, & Rome, the church's role in the middle ages, the influence of the English & Dutch on the great sweet & fortified wines of the world & Bordeaux, and the birth of Champagne. Wine professionals & enthusiasts, history buffs & foodies; this class is fun & rigorous, suitable for all levels, and not at all exclusive to industry folks!*
Wine History & Appreciation II: The New World & Modern Times: A survey of wine and its role in history, religion, art, culture and society from the establishment of vineyards in the New World to contemporary times globally. Subjects include the Phylloxera epidemic, WWI & WWII, American Prohibition, modern wine law in Europe, and the New World, and contemporary trends. Wine professionals & enthusiasts, history buffs & foodies; this class is fun & rigorous, suitable for all levels, and not at all exclusive to industry folks!*
Advanced Wines of the World - Italy, Germany, and Austria
This course covers the diverse regions & wines of Italy, Germany and Austria in depth over an entire quarter devoted exclusively to Italy’s 20 wine regions, and the diverse wines of Germany & Austria; their history, culture, wines, traditions, current trends & exceptional producers.
Advanced Wines of the World - France, and Spain: This course covers the diverse regions & wines of France and Spain in depth over an entire quarter devoted exclusively to; their history, culture, wines, traditions, current trends & exceptional producers.
Advanced Wines of the World - New World: In-depth study of wines from California, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and South America.
* Note: Sensory evaluation of the representative wines is included in every class (in other words, every class includes weekly tasting of rare & extraordinary wines!).
